A Film That Tried to Build a Super Team Before It Was Trendy
In my opinion, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was one of the first real attempts to form a cinematic super team — or, in this case, an “anti-hero” league. It brought together legendary figures from classic literature and monster lore: an immortal adventurer, a vampire, an expert marksman, a brilliant scientist, and other unforgettable characters.
At the time of its release, superhero films weren’t dominating the box office as they are today. Audiences weren’t used to the idea of shared universes. Maybe that’s why this film didn’t get the attention it could have deserved. But looking back now, the concept holds a lot of potential — and with modern audiences much more open to connected stories, perhaps it’s time to revisit it.

A Team Full of Untapped Stories
One thing that always intrigued me about this film was how rich the characters’ backgrounds were. You had Captain Nemo, Dorian Gray, Mina Harker — each with enough story to carry their own film. Imagine a series of prequels, diving into their histories before they became part of the League. It would be very much like what Marvel did so successfully: build individual stories, then bring everyone together to face a greater threat.
And why stop there? The gothic world of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen could easily cross paths with other legends — imagine an epic crossover with Van Helsing, blending two iconic universes. It would be a dream come true for fans of gothic adventures and monster lore.
Who Would Love This Kind of Story Today
Fans of dark adventure, gothic tales, and team-based fantasy would definitely connect with a modern version of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. If you enjoy films like Penny Dreadful, Van Helsing, or even The Witcher, this would absolutely be up your alley.
It would also appeal to viewers who like shared universes but want something different from traditional superhero stories — something with a more literary and gothic flair.
Still Worth Revisiting?
For me, this concept was ahead of its time. With today’s cinematic trends, a reboot — or even a series of origin films — could do wonders for the League. The idea of starting with a Captain Nemo film, or Dorian Gray, then building toward the full team-up, feels natural. And with the appetite for crossovers, tying it to something like Van Helsing could be a brilliant move.
It’s a world full of possibilities. The only question is — what would audiences prefer today: a film, a series, or a new universe altogether?
What would you like to see with The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?
