General Grievous: The Star Wars Villain Who Deserves His Own Series

Among the many unforgettable villains in the Star Wars universe, few are as visually striking — or as frustratingly underexplored — as General Grievous. We’ve seen him spin sabers, intimidate Jedi, and command armies of droids, but for a character with such a fearsome reputation, we’ve never truly seen him in action the way he deserves.

Here’s my personal take: Grievous has a reputation for collecting Jedi lightsabers. He’s called a Jedi killer. But when did we ever witness this in a meaningful way? In the live-action films, his scenes were limited and didn’t come close to showing how he became such a legend.

A backstory worth telling

What makes Grievous intriguing isn’t just his cybernetic design or his four spinning lightsabers — it’s the mystery behind his transformation. Who was he before becoming a half-machine warrior? What turned him into a tool of the Sith? How did he kill all those Jedi and take their weapons?

There’s a rich origin story waiting to be told. Maybe he was once an honorable warrior, betrayed and rebuilt, slowly losing his humanity. Maybe he trained in secret to fight Jedi in brutal, unconventional ways. These are the kinds of character layers we never got to see.

Imagine a series — not bloated or overly long — but a tight, intense miniseries. One that begins with Grievous as a proud warrior of the planet Kalee and ends with him becoming the terrifying figure we meet in Revenge of the Sith.

Style matters

In my view, this wouldn't need to be a massive live-action production. A project with CGI quality like Love, Death & Robots could do wonders. Stylized, focused, dark — it could explore not just battles, but trauma, manipulation, and identity.

Think of a tone closer to Rogue One than The Clone Wars — something mature, atmospheric, and cinematic.

That’s not to say an animated series couldn’t work. In fact, The Clone Wars already showed us glimpses of his brutality. But imagine going deeper, without the constraints of kid-friendly storytelling.

Another reason Grievous stands out is his unmistakable personality — a blend of arrogance, cold logic, and barely contained fury. His iconic mechanical cough, the result of his damaged organic lungs, adds a gritty vulnerability beneath all the armor. It’s a haunting reminder that he was once flesh and blood, now twisted by war and cybernetics. Despite this, he commands respect and fear across the galaxy. Even seasoned Jedi hesitate when they hear his raspy breathing and see the cape open to reveal multiple stolen lightsabers. His legend isn’t just in the stories — it’s in the terror he evokes by simply stepping into a room.

The time is right

With Star Wars expanding its universe through shows like Andor, Ahsoka, and The Mandalorian, now feels like the perfect time to dig into a character like Grievous. He’s visually stunning, morally complex, and linked to one of the darkest periods in Jedi history.

The best part? It wouldn’t require changing canon — just filling in the gaps with care and creativity.

And honestly, I’d love to see him at full power, striking down Jedi in the field, living up to his fearsome nickname, and showing why his lightsaber collection is more than just a gimmick.

Would you like to see a proper story exploring Grievous’ dark past and rise as a Jedi hunter?

Not a fan of the idea. Some characters are better left mysterious. - (0%)

Grievous is cool, but I don’t think we need a whole series for him. - (0%)

Sure, I’d be interested — but maybe in an animated series instead. - (0%)
